Compared to last weeks post, Death Cab for Cutie is a departure from the high energy party rock of the Fratellis, rather Death Cab chooses to keep their songs relatively slow and thoughtful. Death Cab has been a staple of Indie Rock since the early 2000's and has released a ride range of albums including the three latest and best known albums Transatlanticism, Plans, and Narrow Stairs. Death Cab has grown in popularity since their early days and has become one of the best known Indie titles to date. Personal I think the best albums are Plans and Transatlanticism, so I'll give you a rundown of some of my favorite songs.
-Transatlanticism-
*The Sound of Settling- One of the most upbeat and exciting Death Cab songs, as well as one of the most Indie sounding offerings. At just over two minutes longs, The Sound of Settling is energetic and catchy but one of the most underrated songs by this group.
*Transatlanticism- The song from which this album takes its name. This song is amazing and interesting to listen to. Possibly it is my third favorite Death Cab song and is very akin to early Coldplay. Don't let the eight minute length daunt you, this song is worth the buy, especially for long drives or just chilling out.
-Plans (my favorite album)-
*Marching Bands of Manhattan- My favorite Death Cab song. Personally I think this song is the best one by the band. Its hard to explain why I like this song, but I really do. It's a love song, but is written in such a way that no matter if you are in love or not, it is still very good and a treat to listen to. If I could recommend any Death Cab song, it would be this one.
*Crooked Teeth- My second favorite Death Cab song. I think this song probably epitomizes the Indie side of Death Cab. It is fun and snappy, instantly recognizable and also thoughtful at the same time.
* I Will Follow You Into The Dark- An odd Death Cab song, being completely acoustic. Its very good, but if you like it and try to find another Death Cab song like it, you will be hard pressed.
* Soul Meets Body- The flagship song of Plans. Has a very cool techno beat and really showcases Death Cabs overall creativity. This is possibly the easiest Death Cab song to get to like.
-Narrow Stairs-
* Bixby Canyon Bridge- Narrow Stairs saw a departure from the sound of Plans to an almost more grungy sound. I personally don't like alot of songs on the album, but Bixby Canyon Bridge is one of my favorite overall Death Cab songs. It has a sound akin to '90's indie rock bands like Hum and has a very interesting sound. This is one Death Cab song you should check out.
Death Cab defiantly does not have the rock sound of most other bands on the market, rather they have a more thoughtful sound where each song is unique and different and very, very good. Death Cab for Cutie ranks among one of my favorite bands to date.
-Other songs of note- I Will Possess Your Heart, Your Heart is An Empty Room, A Lack of Color, Summer Skin
